Wood Snake 2025: Looking back at the Chinese year
From 29 January 2025 to 16 February 2026, the Wood Snake reigned. What lies behind the Yǐsì sign and what follows now in the Year of the Fire Horse.
When we wrote about the Chinese Year of the Wood Snake at the start of 2025, the whole year still lay ahead of us. Now it’s over: on 16 February 2026 the Snake year ended and the Fire Horse took over on 17 February. Time to look back and assess what the Wood Snake really meant.

Far from the cunning reputation it carries in the West, it symbolises intelligence, discretion and persistence. Those born in a Snake year are regarded as thoughtful, quietly spoken and averse to the spotlight, yet gifted with sharp intuition for people and situations.
Wise, reserved and ambitious
The most well-known exception to this positive image is the devious green snake from the Legend of the White Snake, a story adapted for film many times over. Within the zodiac itself, however, the snake remains a sign of reason. It enjoys forming friendships and thinks strategically, though its greatest weakness is envy, as reported by ZDF.
In the constellation of the Wood Snake (乙巳, Yǐsì), the 42nd sign in the 60-year cycle, additional traits come into play: they are particularly vital, resilient, and determined. The Yǐsì year is traditionally considered a time for growth, prosperity, and development, both professionally and in terms of health. According to the principles of Feng Shui, the ancient study of wind and water, Wood Snakes are also said to be skilled at planning and mediating between people.

This is exactly what makes the Wood element such a perfect match for the snake. Wood represents the slow, the organic, roots, and patience. It is not the blazing fire of the coming Year of the Horse, nor the cool metal, but something that takes its time. A year, therefore, in which building a foundation has paid off more than frantic activity. Just how much a Wood year colors the character of a zodiac sign was already evident in the preceding Year of the Wood Dragon 2024, where the same elemental logic gave a completely different animal a calmer tone.
The 60-year cycle explained
The Chinese calendar does not count in twelve-year steps, as our Western intuition might suggest, but in sixty-year steps. The current cycle began on February 2, 1984, with the Wood Rat (甲子, jiǎzǐ) and ends on January 29, 2044, with the Water Pig (癸亥, guǐhài). The exact start dates are determined by the traditional lunar calendar, specifically the second new moon after the winter solstice.
The twelve zodiac signs follow a fixed order: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. In traditional Chinese characters, they appear quite vivid: 鼠、牛、虎、兔、龍、蛇、馬、羊、猴、雞、狗、豬. The dragon is depicted with sparkling eyes, the horse as it throws its mane back in a gallop.
These twelve animals pass through all five elements in pairs throughout the cycle, represented by the ten so-called Heavenly Stems. Thus, it takes sixty years for the same combination of animal and element to recur. That is why the Wood Snake of 2025 is not just any snake, but one that last appeared in the sky in 1965 and will not return until 2085.
