Caribbean cruise with Carnival – travel report – Day 1: Arrival

In November 2018 the youDRESSED editorial team set sail for eight days aboard the Carnival Horizon, departing from Munich Airport and bound for the Caribbean via Miami. Day 1 was all about arrival and boarding. Seven years on, it’s clear what has endured from that voyage: the Horizon still sails Caribbean routes out of Miami, and the process from check-in to cabin remains almost unchanged. Here’s how that first day unfolded and what to watch for when you plan your own Carnival cruise.

Our journey began at 6 a.m. at Munich Airport with a direct flight to Miami. We scheduled our arrival a full day before the cruise. The logic is simple: if your flight is cancelled or delayed, you’ll otherwise miss the ship-and ships don’t wait. Our flight ran smoothly, leaving us with time to explore Miami before the next morning.

The following day, after breakfast, we headed straight to the port. Boarding begins several hours before departure, so you should budget extra time, much like for a long-haul flight. While we checked in, our luggage was already delivered to the cabin. Then it was time to come aboard.

The Cabin: Why Location Decides Your Voyage

We started by settling into our cabin, and the size took us by surprise. Carnival ships are known industry-wide for their above-average cabin dimensions. We had a balcony stateroom with an open-ocean view, and it’s that view that makes all the difference compared to an interior cabin without a window.

A practical detail many first-time cruisers overlook: when you book, you select your cabin number yourself. At the bow you feel the pitching more sharply, amidships you’ll find the calmest waters, and aft puts you close to some outdoor venues-though also next to engine noise. If you’re prone to seasickness, book amidships on a mid-level deck. If you prefer early nights, avoid cabins directly beneath the Lido Deck with its pool and bar.

Arriving a day early isn’t a luxury; it’s the cheapest insurance against a missed port.

All About the Ship: Carnival Horizon Fact File

The Carnival Horizon belongs to the Vista-class fleet from Carnival Cruise Line. She set sail on her maiden voyage on 2 April 2018 from Barcelona, a 13-day Mediterranean itinerary before settling into her permanent Caribbean home. The ship spans 15 decks and offers roughly 1,965 cabins, a large share of which include balconies.

On board, the Horizon shines for families. She was the first Carnival vessel to debut the Dr. Seuss WaterWorks water park, plus fitness classes, a wellness spa, an open-air cinema, and more than 20 restaurants and bars. You don’t have to dine in the main restaurant every evening if you want variety. A heads-up for planning: several specialty eateries carry an extra charge and should be reserved early.

Seven years after our sailing, the Horizon still plies Caribbean routes out of Miami, from the Western Caribbean with stops in Cozumel and Grand Cayman to the Southern Caribbean calling at Aruba and Curaçao. If you book today, you’ll essentially get the same ship we experienced in 2018, only with a refreshed programme over the intervening years.
